Adam Fousek Talks about Information Technology to the 8th Grade

On February 13th the 8th-grade class interviewed Adam Fousek over a Zoom video. Adam is Vice President of Engineering at Union Bank in Lincoln. Adam worked for several small companies before Union Bank. Union Bank is the third-largest bank in Nebraska. They have 40 other branches and over 1,000 employees. Adam has been currently working at Union Bank for 14 years.

Adam oversees many parts of Union Bank, he is in charge of a dozen different groups that work at Union Bank.  A couple of them are called the Cyber Security Team, Network Engineers, Project Management, Business Analysis, Helpdesk Team, Security Engineers, and Senior Engineers. Most of the groups help secure clients’ data and make sure files and other important information isn’t open for hackers to take. Others work on special projects to enhance customers’ experience with the bank.

Technology is becoming more and more important in companies today. When Adam was in high school he saw that the internet was starting to evolve and become more widely used. Adam saw the opportunity to jump into a growing industry. He didn’t really know if it would be the right decision or if he would like it. Since Adam grew up on a farm, he figured he could go out and see if he liked the industry and, if not he always could go back to the farm. Adam had to get used to sitting in an office every day compared to working on the farm. He sat in an office for so many hours a day when he got home he would have to get a jog/workout in. Since then he has grown to like the office and still stay active.

Adam says he learns more and more about IT (Information Technology) every day. Since the internet is always growing and changing he always has to keep up to date with it. To keep up to date Adam listens to podcasts and reads books to continue to grow his knowledge in the field.

To work in an IT field you have to show good communication skills, want to keep learning every day, have the technical skills to work with a computer, and be involved in a professional organization. You will also need the skill to write emails and letters. As a younger candidate, the best thing to do to prepare for this kind of job is to work with cites on the internet that will further grow your knowledge. There were a couple of cites that Adam mentioned that can be beneficial to someone looking into this field. Some that teach you how to hack and write code.

From this interview, some things that stuck out to me were always being open to new ideas and the ability to keep growing in knowledge. According to Adam “sometimes it just takes that leap of faith.”
