Middle School Social Studies

As we wrap up the semester, here is a recap of what the middle has been exploring in social studies. 6th graders have been diving into Ancient Egypt and what effect they had on the world. They made models of pyramids, dressed up as famous pharaohs, and tried mixtures of spices to preserve apple slices. To enlighten the students about how and why the Egyptians mummified the dead, we zoomed with Julia Jones, a funeral director and embalmer apprentice. This inspired them to mummify one of their own!
5th graders started off learning about the beauty of our country and its geography. They studied the regions and the states and capitals. Then we moved into how America became the country that we know today! The Triangle Trade was a big interest and was fun to act out. They even had their own trade fair. Now we are learning about colonization and will start 2nd semester with a 13 colony study.
In Nebraska history, we are learning about how the good life came to be! The 4th graders started learning about the state symbols, song, softdrink, bird, etc. This class loved to sing “Beautiful Nebraska”! Then we started into the history of settlement. We’ve just wrapped up learning about the adventures of the Oregon Trail. The 4th graders were hooked on the story of Hattie Campbell! We broke it up a little by building covered wagons that float and enjoying some skeeter cakes! The chocolate chip pancakes resembled the mosquitoes that they had to eat on the Trail that some were hesitant to eat! This week we took a mini field trip to the Clarkson Museum to explore some local artifacts. We always appreciate how welcoming they are to give tours and let us explore!
First semester flew by with these middle schoolers and I look forward to bringing history alive in 2024!
