Student Spotlight: Derek Gurnsey

Derek Gurnsey is a junior this year at the Clarkson Public Schools and is currently living with his parents, Justin and Amy Gurnsey.  Derek has an older brother, Lucas, who works in utility line. He also has a younger sister, Alyssa, who is in the 5th grade at CPS.

When Derek graduates he wants to become either a welder or a chiropractor. He chose to be a welder because he likes to fix things.  He is also thinking of being a chiropractor because he wants to be able to help people, and he enjoys learning the science of the body. He has three colleges in mind:  Northeast, Wayne State, and Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa. He is not sure which one he will attend yet.

Derek said that his whole family inspires him because they are always trying to motivate him into not taking the easy way out and always trying to push him to do his best.

Derek is out for football and wrestling this year. He has been playing football for 5 years, and he has been wrestling for 9 years. He chose wrestling as his favorite sport because it is an independent sport, and he has been doing it for a really long time. Derek said that his favorite subject would have to be history. He chose history because he likes to learn about what happened in the past and what happens in the present. Derek said his favorite top two teachers would have to be Mrs. Morfeld and Mrs. Beeson. He couldn’t decide which one he likes more because they both are funny and joke around in class to make it fun, and they both really help him when he needs it.

When Derek has free time he likes to do puzzles or put together model cars. He also likes to work out so he can stay in shape. Derek said that his favorite school lunch would have to be taco salad because he really likes taco meat. His least favorite lunch is roast beef sandwiches.
